European Union: interview with EU Climate Pact Ambassador Christian Clauwers, from COP28 in Dubai.

“As an ambassador, I take action for people and planet, encouraging others to do more to combat climate change. I take action through photography, telling the story of the climate crisis and its consequences through a lens. Whether capturing the melting sea ice in Antarctica or the declining number of emperor penguins due to habitat loss, I document the fragile, conflictual relationship between humans and nature, made worse by climate change.” — Christian Clauwers

EUROFLEETS+ Scientific Campaigns: Unleashing the Mysteries of the Deep

In the vast expanse of our oceans lies a realm of untapped knowledge and undiscovered wonders. Embracing the challenge to unravel these mysteries, the Eurofleets+ project shines as a guiding light, propelling scientific advancement and fostering global collaboration. Central to its mission is Transnational Access, a gateway to a world of collaborative research and cutting-edge exploration.

A recent video takes viewers on a captivating journey into the heart of Eurofleets+, showcasing the profound significance of its Transnational Access program. Through the lens of researchers who have experienced these transformative opportunities, the film delves into the profound impact this access has on marine science and the scientific community as a whole.

I proudly contributed to this Eurofleets+ video with drone footage of the Belgian research vessel BELGICA. More info on www.eurofleets.eu

UNESCO and GOOS (Global Ocean Observation System) websites

Under the surface: When a cruise through the Mediterranean Sea is not exactly a holiday… Day and night, a group of scientists are gliding through a special route across the Mediterranean Sea, stopping every 25 nautical miles to measure important parameters, from the surface to the 3 km deep bottom. They undertake this journey every 5 to 8 years - not only to document the effects of climate change today, but also to witness what awaits in the near future. Read more on www.unesco.org

Happily contributed with 3 photos to the articles written by Laura Stukonytė on the UNESCO and GOOS websites.
I took these photos during the TalPro22 expedition on the R/V BELGICA in May 2022.

Current Tides Magazine, Dalhousie Oceanography Research Magazine - Vol. 5, 2022

Happily contributed with my photo taken on the TalPro22 expedition on the R/V BELGICA to the Current Tide Magazine. This image contributes to the scientific publication of Lorenza Raimondi (editor in chief Arienna Balbar).

Ocean Observing System Report Card 2022

The United Nations released the new Ocean Observing System Report Card - a high-level annual report providing a deep insight on the state, capacity and value of our Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS):
www.ocean-ops.org/reportcard2022

I proudly contributed to the video with drone footage of the Belgian research vessel BELGICA.

In 2022, the Report Card focuses on how an integrated observing network adds value to society across the three GOOS delivery areas of climate, operational services and ocean health. It highlights physical, biogeochemical and, for the first time, biological observations, providing a global view of the state of the GOOS, identifying the latest observing networks’ progress, as well as the key challenges and opportunities to enhance the system.

BLUE LEADERS EVENT, COP25 in Madrid (2019) and also at COP26 in Glasgow (2021)

As a member of the Belgian delegation at the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP25 in Madrid as well as 26 in Glasgow, I aimed to close the gap between science and policy in addition to raising awareness of the impact of global warming on an international level. I proudly contributed to the Ministerial event Blue Leaders by showing my footage of both Oceans and Polar regions.

ONLYONE | SEALEGACY

So proud to have contributed to the incredible film of Diwi Valiente, as I took footage at COP26 of this inspiring climate activist Diwigdi “Diwi” Valiente. Diwi is a self-described “climate warrior” fighting to end plastic pollution in his home country of Panama and beyond.

COP26, SWEDISH GOVERNMENT

During COP26 in Glasgow, I cooperated with the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs by showing my Antarctica photos at the Swedish booth in the Virtual Ocean Pavilion Sweden highlighted why the ocean matters in climate negotiations and to all life on our planet. At the pavilion, Sweden presented its policies with regards to Antarctica.

MY WHITEOUT BOOK AS A GIFT FROM THE BELGIAN GOVERNMENT FOR GOVERNMENT LEADERS AT COP26

The Vice-Prime Minister and Minister of Justice and the North Sea Vincent Van Quickenborne handed over 13 editions of my limited edition book WHITEOUT  to heads of states at the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow. For me, this is a highlight of appreciation for my work which encourages me to continue doing what I do: to document earth's beauty and vulnerability.

NAUSICAÁ, COP26

Proudly contributed with video footage to the Virtual Ocean Pavilion during COP26.

FIT FOR 55 CONFERENCE

In October 2021, I presented my photos at the FIT FOR 55 Conference, organised by the Climate change cell of the Public Health Department of the Belgian Federal Government in Brussels, which included handing over my book North & South Pole to the Federal Minister of Climate Zakia Khattabi.

FIT FOR 55 comprises the package of proposals that the European Commission put on the table to align European legislation with the new climate ambition (an emission reduction of at least 55% by 2030, compared to 1990.

DEGREES TO EXTINCTION

Proudly contributed drone footage to the documentary “Degrees to Extinction: How to survive climate change”. The film examines technological, political and economic solutions that will mitigate the extreme climate change conditions we face. The film's executive producers are Dan Rather and Wayne Nelson. The Producer/Director of “Degrees to Extinction” is Joyce Ferder Rankin, an award-winning photojournalist and editor. She has won two Emmys and was awarded a distinction by the Royal Photographic Society. She recently gave a TEDx Talk about climate change.

JAN HENDERIKSE

Proudly contributed to the extensive monograph which pays homage to Dutch artist Jan Henderikse (*1937), cofounder of the Nul Group (1961-1965), the Dutch ‘branch’ of the European ZERO movement.
