During the lecture, I will dive into the crucial role of the R/V BELGICA in advancing marine and climate research and share stories from the frontline of climate change research, from the polar regions to remote Pacific island states and even inside the Svalbard Global Seed Vault and Arctic World Archive. The lecture will honor the legacy of Adrien de Gerlache and the pioneering 'Belgian Antarctic Expedition' of 1897–1899, highlighting its significance as the starting point of Belgium’s deep connection to polar research.
